Performance, settings and controllers
Roadhouse Simulator is not a heavy game on paper, but the noisiest player reports after the Demo and Prologue were about framerate — specifically outside the building. Here is what the store lists, what players hit, and what to try.
System requirements (from the Steam store page)
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i3 3.0 GHz or Ryzen 3xxx | Intel Core i5 (recent generation) |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 4 GB VRAM | Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 or better, 6 GB VRAM |
| DirectX | Version 11 | Version 11 |
| Storage | 10 GB available space | 15 GB available space |
64-bit processor and OS required. The game is listed for Windows on Steam (a GOG listing for the same title also mentions macOS — if you are on a Mac, confirm on the store page before buying, because the Steam listing is Windows-only).
What players reported
- Outside areas run worse than inside. Player Nebthtet reported lag on a 5070 Ti at 5040×1440 on max details, and noted the FPS "skyrockets when you go inside, but any outside area is a lagfest" — adding that the build offered no dynamic resolution or frame generation options at the time. A Prologue thread ("Very laggy outsid") describes the same pattern.
- Cop inspection frequency was flagged as too high by player super (see Gangs & the Sheriff).
- Dual-screen setups. Player A cool Guy reported the game refusing to display properly across two monitors ("out of spec", unable to move the window).
- Won't start. Player Raven Misery October reported error codes on launch with nothing happening after pressing Play.
- Max settings still stutter (release build, September 21). A launch-day review reports "issues with max settings which causes a lot of lag" on hardware that runs the game fine otherwise, and adds that the bottom of the screen was cut off at the monitor's native resolution — worth testing another resolution or windowed mode if your HUD looks clipped.
- Freezes and stuck states (release build, September 22). Player Neutmagee reports the game freezing at the start and locking up again at the objective where you slap a gang member caught weeing on the walls — three times in one session. The published hotfix notes do not name that objective, but #4 and #5 fix several stuck-state and tutorial soft-locks, so update before concluding it is still broken.
The list mixes Prologue/Demo-era reports with launch-week ones — each entry says which. None of the five hotfixes posted between September 21 and 23 is a performance patch. If you hit any of these, use the in-game F7 bug report (the builds show "PRESS [F7] TO REPORT BUG") rather than a forum post — that is the channel DRAGO's hotfix notes reference.
Settings to try first if you are lagging outside
- Drop shadows and foliage/vegetation quality. The outside areas are where the density is; these are the usual culprits.
- Lower the resolution scale / play at 1440p instead of 4K. The reporter above was at 5040×1440 — that is a lot of pixels for a sim.
- Cap the framerate. An uncapped frame budget makes the outside stutter worse.
- Windowed or borderless for multi-monitor setups, then move the window manually with
Shift+F1if the mouse is captured — the HUD itself advertises that shortcut.
Controllers: read this before you buy for a gamepad
- In August, DRAGO pinned a thread titled "GAMEPAD & <UNBOUND> BUG" explaining that the Demo did not support gamepads: some movement responded, which made it look supported, but the actual tools (hammer, mop, plunger, serving drinks) were unbound.
- The release build did not change that. Steam's current listing still carries no controller support tag (categories: Single-player, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing) and the appdetails API returns no controller support entry — while third-party game databases and the GOG listing have described full controller support. The storefronts still disagree, but only one of them is selling this build.
- On September 22 a player asked in that pinned thread whether gamepad support made it into the full release. The answer in the thread is "no", and DRAGO has not followed up. Treat keyboard and mouse as the only supported setup for now.
- If a tool shows as
<unbound>, you are seeing the reported gamepad binding bug, not a missing keybind on your end. Players Lysander Valerius and Crystal both asked for controller support, one of them for accessibility reasons.
Steam features at launch
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| Steam Cloud | Listed |
| Family Sharing | Listed |
| Achievements | Live — 50 of them, added during the first day, after two unlock bugs were fixed in Hotfix #2 and #4 (details on Release & Platforms) |
| Multiplayer / co-op | Not listed. The game is single-player; a Steam thread asking for multiplayer has no announced support. |
| Photo mode | Present — "PRESS [P] TO OPEN PHOTO MODE" appears in the official screenshots |
| Controllers | Not supported — no controller tag in the release listing |
Unconfirmed at launch
The controller question is settled: the release build does not support gamepads (see above). Still open are the frame-generation and dynamic-resolution options — no patch note mentions either, no screenshot shows them, and the launch-day complaint about max-settings stutter does not name a setting that fixed it — and whether outside-area performance improved after launch. Five hotfixes in three days, none of them a performance patch.
